Scripture · Genesis 12:1-7, Genesis 22:15-18

“And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing.”

Genesis 12:2 · KJV

Historical context

God spoke these words to Abram (later Abraham) when he was 75 years old, calling him to leave everything familiar and journey to an unknown land. This covenant promise launched the entire biblical narrative of redemption. God didn't just promise to bless Abraham—He promised that through Abraham, all nations would be blessed. That promise finds its ultimate fulfillment in Christ.

Scripture connections

This Abrahamic covenant is referenced throughout Scripture as the foundation of God's relationship with His people. Paul explains in Galatians 3:8-9 that all who have faith are children of Abraham and heirs to this blessing. The "blessing to all nations" points directly to Jesus, through whom salvation comes to Jew and Gentile alike.

Why this day matters

We begin our study of God's promises at the beginning—with the promise that started it all. Every other promise in Scripture flows from this covenant of blessing. As you read, remember: you are included in this promise through faith in Christ.

Prayer of Faith

Lord, just as You kept Your promises to Abraham, I trust You to keep Your promises to me. Make me a blessing to others. Amen.
